A common national test for admission to engineering courses across the country that takes into account Class XII board marks will be introduced from 2013.

Under the new scheme, all aspirants will have to give two exams — JEE main and JEE advanced — to be held on the same day. The aspirant's set of scores will decide whether he or she will be eligible for admission to the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), centrally funded institutions like NITs (An earlier version of this story mistakenly described National Institutes of Technology, or NITs, as NIITs. We regret the error and thank our readers for pointing it out.) or IIITs or state-funded institutions.

For admission to IITs, students will be shortlisted on the basis of their cumulative score for Class XII and the main test (50% weightage each). The merit list for the elite institutes will be decided on the candidate's performance in the advanced test.

The weightage for admission to other institutions will vary. For centrally funded institutions which include NITs and IIITs, it will be 40% for Class XII board, 30% for the main test and another 30% for the advanced test: a format that IITs have also agreed to follow from 2015.

States will have to fix weightage for admission to institutions they govern. Class XII marks will be standardized on percentile basis by a formula worked out by the Indian Statistical Institute.

While the main test shall be multiple choice type paper, the nature and modalities of the JEE advanced test shall be determined by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs.

For students who have appeared for Class XII board in 2012, the council has decided that they may be allowed to sit for the board exam again if they would like to improve their performance in order to benefit from the new format which factors in their performance at the school level. CBSE and state boards will be asked to make appropriate arrangements.

The decision, after two years of consultations and deliberations, was taken in a meeting with the joint councils of IITs, NITs and IIITs.

The All India IIT Federation submitted a dissent note at the meeting, continuing with their insistence that the exam be postponed till 2014 and Class XII be given a maximum of 40% weightage.

Elaborating on the decision, HRD minister Kapil Sibal admitted to "resistance'' from the IIT system, but said the council had secured an agreement by conceding their two main demands. As insisted by the IIT Senate and Federation, they will continue to have academic control over the exam including paper-setting, evaluation and preparation of merit list. Their demand that the main exam scores be used in addition to the board exam to shortlist eligible students was also accepted.

In turn, Sibal managed to get the IIT Council to agree to introduction of the common entrance test next year instead of 2014 as demanded by the IIT Senate and Federation. The minister told reporters that states like Haryana, Maharashtra and Gujarat had already agreed to adopt the new format. An education ministers' meeting on June 5 will be crucial to gauge interest among states who will have the freedom to decide their own weightages within the format.

Stressing that this will reduce mental and financial burden among aspirants, Sibal said the new system would ensure better results in schools and cut down dependence on coaching institutes.

Even as the process of selection to the IITs would be different then other institutes, Professor Sanjay Dhande, Director of IIT Kanpur said the counselling to IITs and other institutes will be done jointly and allotment of seats will be done together.

Sibal made it clear that JAB of the IIT system would have complete control on matters such as paper setting, evaluation and preparation of merit list over the advanced test while CBSE will provide administrative support for conduct of the examination.

For conduct of the main examination, an expanded joint admission board will be constituted including the NIT, other centrally funded institutes and state government representatives.

   As the Railways are aware that in terms of instructions issued vide this Ministry's letters of even number dated 03.09.2009 and 07.06.2010 on the above subject, scheme for filling up of vacancies as may arise up to 31.08.2009 & 31.12.2011 respectively were circulated to the Railways. Further vide letter of even number dated 21.11.2011, the existing methodology to fill up the promotional vacancies has been extended till 31.12.2012 and vide para 2.1 of the letter ibid, contents reflected in para 2.3 of Board's letter of even number dated 03.09.2009 were deleted.

   2. On a reference from both the Federations, the matter was reconsidered by this Ministry and it has been decided to withdraw the para 2.1 of Board's letter of even number dated 21.11.2011, thereby restoring para 2.3 of Board's letter dated 03.09.2009. It is further advised that the Railways may fill the promotional vacancies as may arise up to 31.12.2012 keeping in view para 2.3 of letter dated 03.09.2009, if not assessed otherwise. Other stipulation made in the letter ibid shall hold good till further orders.

Children Education Allowance/Hostel Subsidy-Clarification.

Subject: Children Education Allowance/Hostel Subsidy-Clarification.

   The undersigned is directed to refer to Department of Personnel & Training’s O.M.No.12011/03/2008-Estt.(AL) dated 2nd September, 2008 and subsequent clarification No.l2011/08/2010-Estt.(AL) dated 30th December, 2010 on the above subject and to say that this Department has been receiving various references seeking clarification whether fee charged by schools for teaching through audio-visual aids can be reimbursed. It is clarified that fee paid to the school for the use of any aid or appliances by the child is reimbursable. Hence, if fee is charged by the school for teaching through audio-visual tools, the same is reimbursable as “fee” mentioned in para 1(e) of the O.M. mentioned above.

Uniform Recruitment Policy for Judicial Service

In exercise of powers conferred under proviso to Article 309 read with Articles 233 and 234 of the Constitution, the State Governments frame rules and regulations in consultation with the respective High Courts in respect of the members of the State Judicial Service. Thus, the recruitments, appointments, posting/ transfers and other service conditions of judicial officers of the district/ subordinate courts are all governed by the respective State Governments. In some States the process of selection is undertaken through State Public Service Commissions, while in other States it is through the High Courts. Giving this information in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha recently, Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister of Law & Justice, said that while accepting the recommendations of the First National Judicial Pay Commission regarding recruitment to Higher Judicial Service, the Supreme Court of India in its judgement dated 21.3.2002 in W.P. (C) NO. 1022 of 1989 – All India Judges Association & Others Vs. UOI & Others had, inter-alia, laid down the quota for recruitment to Higher Judicial Services respectively of the Civil Judges (Senior Division) on the basis of seniority and through limited competitive examination, as well as of eligible advocates. The Apex Court had further directed that appropriate rules shall be framed by the High Courts as early as possible. The Supreme Court continues to monitor the implementation of its directions from time to time. All State Governments were party to the case, Shri Khurshid informed the House.


GPF and SDS Interest Rates Revised for the Financial Year 2012-13

 Government of India has revised the Interest Rates for the financial year 2012-13 in respect of State PFs (GPF) and Special Deposit Schemes (SDS) for non-government Provident, Superannuation and Gratuity funds (SDS), 1975, from 8.6% to 8.8%  with effect from 01.04.2012. The funds concerned are:-

1. The General Provident Fund (Central Services).
2. The Contributory Provident Fund (India).
3. The All India Services Provident Fund.
4. The State Railway Provident Fund.

Fresh empanelment of private hospitals and diagnostic centres -LUCKNOW

Subject: Fresh empanelment of private hospitals and diagnostic centres and revision of package rates applicable under CGHS LUCKNOW.

   The undersigned is directed to invite reference to this Ministry’s Office Memoranda of even number dated the 8th December 2010, 19th January 2011 and 14.11.2011 vide which Continuous empanelment scheme has been initiated under CGHS, LUCKNOW for treating CGHS beneficiaries. The CGHS rates applicable have already been notified and are available on CGHS website. Three rates were notified, one for super-specialty hospitals, the second for hospitals that were accredited with the NABH and the third for hospitals not accredited with the NABH.

   2. The undersigned is directed to enclose further list of hospitals and diagnostic centres, under the categories mentioned in the application for continuous empanelment and tender document that have conveyed their acceptance of the CGHS rates notified under different CGHS Cities and have signed the Memorandum of Agreement with CGHS and have also furnished the appropriate performance bank guarantee. These hospitals and diagnostic centres are now taken as included in the list of approved hospitals for empanelment under CGHS, LUCKNOW. It has now been decided that in the list of hospitals and diagnostic centres enclosed, and have now been approved under the fresh empanelment procedure and have now signed the fresh Memorandum of Agreement and submitted the appropriate performance guarantee will be eligible to treat CGHS beneficiaries and charge at the revised rates with effect from the date of issue of this Office Memorandum. The empanelment shall be for a period of one year or till next empanelment, whichever is earlier.

Subject:- Recruitment of Stenographers Grade D’ in CSSS through Stenographers Grade ‘C’ & ‘D’ Examination, 2011 conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) - nomination of qualified candidates - reg.

   The undersigned is directed to say that based on the results of the Stenographers Grade ‘C’ & ‘D’ Examination-2011, the Staff Selection Commission recommended 353 candidates for appointment as Steno Grade ‘D’ in CSSS. The examination dossiers of aforesaid 353 (General -174, SC-62, ST-7, OBC-110 ) candidates have been received in this Department for appointment to the Stenographer Grade ‘D’ of CSSS for the Select List Year-2011. Accordingly, they are nominated to the different Cadre Units of CSSS as listed in the Annexure to this O.M. in the order of their merit for appointment as Steno Grade ‘D’ of CSSS.

   2. Since these candidates have neither been medically examined nor have their character and antecedents been verified, the Cadre Units are requested to complete their pre-appointment formalities before they are actually appointed as Steno Grade ‘D’ latest by 15th June, 2012.

   3. In accordance with ‘Instructions for the candidates’ relating to this Examination, qualified candidates are required to submit their original certificates for verification to the authority who will give them the Offer of appointment. The appointing authorities may, therefore, call for the original certificates and check the relevant particulars from them regarding date of birth, educational qualifications, claims for OBC/SC/ST/Ex- servicemen/PH and claim in respect of age relaxation. If any discrepancy is found in any particular case, the SSC may be informed accordingly and copy of the same may also be endorsed to this Department.

   4. In pursuance of the instructions contained in para 2.5 of the brochure regarding reservation in service for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes circulated with the Ministry of Home Affairs O.M.No.1/2/61-SCT (I) dated 27th April 1962, the responsibility for verification of the claims of the SC/ST/OBC candidates is that of the appointing authority. The candidates may, accordingly, be offered appointments provisionally subject to their furnishing the prescribed caste certificate in the prescribed form within a reasonable time, which should be verified by the appointing authority.

   5. In cases where the candidates are already employed in the Government offices, the Offer of appointment may be sent to them through their respective offices. As soon as a candidate is taken on the strength of the Ministries/Departments after completion of pre appointment formalities, a copy of his/her Office Order indicating the date of his/her joining the duty may be intimated along with his/her roll number and rank number to this Department.

   6. The Offer of appointment should be sent only by Registered Post. If the postal authorities return the letter undelivered, the Letter along with the envelope containing remarks by the postal authorities should be retained for record. In such cases, a copy of the Offer of appointment should be sent to the permanent address of the candidate, if it is different from that of the initial mailing address. The dossiers of such candidates should be returned to the SSC only if the second letter is also returned undelivered under intimation to this Department.

   7. At least five weeks time from the date of issue of the Offer of appointment should be given to a candidate to respond to the Offer of appointment. A registered reminder may be sent immediately after the expiry of five weeks time, if necessary. If the candidate does not join duty within 3 months from the date of first Letter, his candidature may be cancelled. However, if the candidate further makes a request for extension of joining time and on consideration by the Cadre Unit, it is decided to grant him/her extension beyond 3 months, he/she may be asked to join within the stipulated time and he/she may also be informed that on joining the post his/her seniority would be determined as per provision made in DOP&T O.M. No. 9/23/71-Estt.(D) dated 6.6.78 as amended vide O.M. No.35015/2/93-Estt(B) dated 9.8.1995.

   8. The dossiers of candidates are forwarded herewith and these should be retained, on their appointment, in the Ministry/Department/Office, as part of their Service Book. It may specially be noted that the dossier shall be deemed to be authentic only if the photograph of the candidate in the dossier is EMBOSSED with the special stamp of the SSC. Before taking any further action, it may please be ensured that the photograph of the candidate in the dossier is duly embossed and in case any discrepancy is noticed, the matter may be referred to the SSC without any delay.

   9. If any candidate fails to report for duty or there is no response or the Offer is declined, after a registered reminder, the Offer of appointment should formally be cancelled and the candidate be informed accordingly. The dossiers of such candidates should be returned thereafter to the Staff Selection Commission directly under intimation to this Department after placing a copy each of the Offer of appointment, reminder thereof and the cancellation memo, in the respective dossier. The dossier(s) should be returned under the signature of the officer to whom the same were sent in your office. He/She should also sign the list of dossier(s) which is/are returned with the Letter.

   10. These Steno Grade ‘D’ would be nominated for induction training in the ISTM shortly. The dates of the induction training programme would be intimated to all the Cadre Units in due course. All the Cadre Units shall relieve their Stenographers Grade ‘D’ for the induction training programme at the ISTM as and when they are nominated.

   11. All Cadre Units of CSSS are requested to ensure that in case some staff have been outsourced for stenographic assistance by showing the vacancies of Steno Grade ‘D’, the same may be reduced proportionately keeping in view the number of Steno Grade ‘D’ nominated to the respective Cadre Units. The Financial Advisers of all the Cadre Units are also requested to ensure that outsourced stenographic assistance is proportionately reduced as the nominated Steno Grade ‘D’ join in the Cadre Unit.

Recruitment of Sub-Inspector (Executives) in Delhi Police-2012

Staff Selection Commission, SSC, at the instance of Ministry of Home Affairs started recruitment of Sub-Inspectors in Central Armed Police Force, CAPF, a few years ago and recruitment of Assistant Sub-Inspectors in CISF in 2010. Recruitment of Constables (GD) and Riflemen (GD) in CAPF has been entrusted to SSC since 2011. Now, on the request of Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been agreed that recruitment of Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police will also be undertaken by the SSC.

Recruitment of Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police Examination 2012 will be advertised on 2.6.2012(tentative) and the written examination is scheduled on 19.08.2012. The stages and scheme of recruitment will be identical to those of Sub-Inspector in CAPFs Examination, with recruitment having three stages-Written Examination, Physical Endurance Test and Medical Examination and Interview –cum-Personality test. Vacancies communicated by Delhi Police for this recruitment are 324 for male and 11 for female candidates respectively with degree in any subject as the minimum educational qualification. The recruitment will be on All-India basis with the written examination, PET/Medical Examination and Interview held at Regional Offices for the convenience of the candidates.

            Widows, dependents and children of martyred and disabled war soldiers get liberalized/special/normal family pension as per their entitlement.
Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare in the Ministry of Defence is the Nodal Department for welfare of ex-serviccmen, widows or dependents and children of martyred and disabled soldiers. Its attached offices namely Directorate General of Resettlement andKendriyaSainik Board are working in this direction. Rajya and ZilaSainik Boards at the State & district level look into the condition of families of martyrs and disabled soldiers.
            Besides this, each Service Headquarter has dedicated cell to look into welfare issues of widows, dependents and children of martyred and disabled war soldiers. Record offices, local formations/units have system in place to periodically interact formally & informally with families of martyred & disabled soldiers.

   The undersigned is directed to refer to this Department’s Office Memorandum of even no. dated 24th April, 2012, forwarding therewith the Tables of Benefits for the savings fund of the Scheme for the year 2012 based on a subscription of `10 per month from 1.1.1982 to 31.12.1989 and `15 per month w.e.f. 1.1.1990 onwards and table of benefits based on a subscription of ` 10/- p.m throughout.

Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2011 Results Announced

   The result of the Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2011 has been announced. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had held written part of the examination in October-November, 2011 and the interviews for Personality Test in March-April, 2012. A total number of 910 candidates have been recommended for appointment to –

(i)             Indian Administrative Service;
(ii)           Indian Foreign Service;
(iii)        Indian Police Service; and
(iv)         Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.

The list of selected candidates includes 420 General (including 21 Physically Challenged candidates), 255 Other Backward Classes (including 8 Physically Challenged candidates), 157 Scheduled Castes (including 4 Physically Challenged candidate) and 78 Scheduled Tribes  candidates.

            Appointment to the various Services will be made according to the number of vacancies available with due consideration to the provisions contained in Rules 2 and 19 of the Rules of the Examination and subject to the final decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court / Hon’ble High Courts / Hon’ble C.A.Ts. on the S.L.Ps / R.As / W.Ps. / O.As. pending therein.

The number of vacancies reported by the Government for the Indian Administrative Service is 170 (85 General, 46 Other Backward Classes, 26 Scheduled Castes and 13 Scheduled Tribes);  for the Indian Foreign Service is 40 (23 General, 9 Other Backward Classes, 5 Scheduled Castes and 3 Scheduled Tribes); for the Indian Police Service is 150 (78 General, 37 Other Backward Classes, 21 Scheduled Castes and 14 Scheduled Tribes); for the Central Services Group ‘A’ is 543 (273 General, 148 Other Backward Classes, 81 Scheduled Castes and 41 Scheduled Tribes) and for Central Services Group ‘B’ is 98 (52 General, 15 Other Backward Classes, 24 Scheduled Castes and 7 Scheduled Tribes).  This includes 33 vacancies for Physically Challenged candidates.

            In accordance with Rule 16(4) & (5) of the Civil Services Examination Rules, 2011, the Commission is maintaining a consolidated Reserve List of 182 candidates which includes 91 General, 72 Other Backward Classes, 12 Scheduled Casts and 7 Scheduled Tribes candidates ranking in order of merit below the last recommended candidate under respective category.

Highlight of Civil Services Exam, 2011 Results

  Following are the important highlights of the Civil Services Examination, 2011, for which final result has been declared today.

Ø      The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2011 was conducted on 12th June, 2011.  A record number of 4,72,290 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 2,43,003 candidates have actually appeared.
Ø      11984 candidates were declared qualified for the Main written examination held in October-November, 2011 out of which 2417 candidates were selected for the Personality Test conducted in March-April, 2012.  Finally, 910 candidates (715 male & 195 female) have been recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services against 1001 reported vacancies.  Vacancies unfilled presently are on account of 91 reserved community candidates qualifying on general standards.  Depending on the options exercised by them finally, these vacancies will be filled by candidates recommended for the Reserve List that is maintained by the Commission.
Ø      The First two positions have been taken by female candidates.  The top 25 candidates include 19 male (including 01 visually challenged candidate) and 06 female candidates. In the top 100 candidates, there are 21 female candidates.
Ø      Ms. Shena Aggarwal (Roll No. 233541) has topped the Examination.  She has done MBBS from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.  This is her 3rd attempt.
Ø      The 2nd ranker is Ms. Rukmani Riar (Roll No. 27895).  She has done Master of Arts (Social Entrepreneurship) from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.  The is her 1st attempt.
Ø      The 3rd position is bagged by Shri Prince Dhawan (Roll No. 1804).  He has done M. Tech (Elect. Engg.) from IIT, Delhi.  This is his 1st attempt.
Ø      The result also showcases the pan-Indian distribution of successful candidates of this Examination. Amongst the top 25 candidates, there are candidates claiming domicile from as many as 16 States, i.e., Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Uttarakhand & Uttar Pradesh.
Ø      The top 25 candidates include alumni from some of the premier educational institutions of the country including AIIMS, IIM and IITs.  An alumnus of London School of Economics also figures in the top 25.
Ø      The family background of top 25 candidates show diverse representation from all walks of the life which include farmer, teacher, businessman, army personnel, low and middle level govt. servants, doctors, advocate, professor & civil servants.
Ø      Amongst top 25 candidates, 6 have made to the merit lift in their 1st attempt; 07 in 2nd attempt; 09 in 3rd attempt; and 01 each in 4th, 5th & 6th attempts.  As many as 12 have already been recommended to services other than IAS on the basis of Civil Services Examinations of previous years.
Ø      Of the top 25 candidates – 13 appeared from Delhi; 3 from Jaipur, 2 each from Mumbai & Chandigarh; and 1 each from Hyderabad, Chennai, Dispur, Patna & Jammu Centres.

Subscribers to NPS to Now have Choice of Annuity Service

Providers; PFRDA takes Important Step towards Providing an Exit Route to the Subscribers
Subscribers to the National Pension System (NPS) will now have a choice of Annuity Service Providers, from whom they can choose their annuity schemes on their exit from NPS on attainment of 60 years of age. Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has empanelled the following six IRDA approved life insurance companies for providing annuity services to the subscribers of National Pension System (NPS).

1. Life Insurance Corporation of India
2. SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
3. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
4. Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
5. Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
6. Reliance Life Insurance Co. Ltd.

under the provisions of NPS, a maximum of 60% of corpus accumulated at the time of exit, normally on the attainment of 60 years of age, can be withdrawn but a minimum of 40% corpus has to be utilized for purchasing an annuity from one of the empanelled annuity service providers. Subscriber can choose from any of the six above mentioned annuity service providers and can also make their choice of the annuity scheme from amongst the schemes being offered by these providers.

With the above empanelment, PFRDA has taken an important step towards providing an exit route to the subscribers.


Linking of GPF Interest Rates With EPFO

The rates of interest on General Provident Fund (GPF) is 8% for the period from 1.4.2011 to 30.11.2011 and 8.6% from 1.12.2011 to 31.3.2012, whereas the rate of interest on EPF for the financial year 2011-12 is 8.25%. Rate of interest on EPF is fixed on the recommendation of the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Ministry of Labour and Employment based on the income earned on the accumulated fund during the financial year. However, rate of interest on GPF is generally fixed after taking into consideration the average secondary market yields on government securities of similar maturity.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Namo Narain Meena in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

Discount on Air India Tickets

Shri Ajit Singh, the Minister of Civil Aviation informed Lok Sabha today in a written reply that Air India offers 50% discount on basic fare component of full normal economy class fare to Senior Citizens who have attained the age of 63 years and above on the date of commencement of travel and 50% discount on basic fare component of full normal economy class fare to students upto 26 years of age, applicable for travel between home town and place of study only.

The Minister further informed that Air India also offers concessions to other categories on domestic sectors to Senior Citizens, Students, Blind passengers, Cancer patient, Armed Forces, Armed Forces Bravery Awardees, Locomotor Disability, General Reserve Engineering Force, Sport Personnel –North East, Water Disabled Officers, Arjuna Awardees, War Widows, Para Military Force, Police Medal for Gallantry, Civilian Gallantry Awards and Youth passenger. Besides this, Air India also offers 100% discount on total fare to Bharat Ratna Awardees, Golden Tributes Card Holders (living members of Constituent Assembly of India) and Ex-Andaman Freedom Fighters or to Widows of Ex-Andaman Freedom Fighters.

Air India estimates that approximately 811 persons travelled during the period January to March 2012 which accounts for about 0.036% of its total carriage. It is not possible to estimate a loss as the carriage on account of these discounts would possibly be incremental and not termed as a loss, the Minister informed the Members.

New ESI Hospitals

                The Union Labour & Employment Minister Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has informed the Lok  Sabha  that the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has proposed to set up more ESIC Hospitals in the country including in Odisha. Details are Annexed.

                                The land has been allotted by the State Government of Odisha for construction of ESI Hospitals at Angul&Duburi.  At Angul, the process for possession of land is under way. At Duburi, Jajpur, land has been acquired by the ESI Corporation for setting up a hospital.

                The hospitals at Angul and Duburi would be operationalzed after the infrastructure is in place.

                                                The Minister was replying to a written whether the  Government has decided to set up more ESI hospitals in the country including Bhubaneshwar.

AICPIN for the month of March 2012

All-India Consumer Price Index Numbersfor Industrial Workers on Base 2001=100 for the Month of March 2012
All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 2001=100 for the month of March, 2012 increased by 2 points and stood at 201 (two hundred one).

During March, 2012, the index recorded maximum increase of 7 points each in Bhilwara, Vijaywada and Salem centres, 6 points each in Belgaum, Ajmer, Ghaziabad and Mundakkayam centres, 5 points in 3 centres, 4 points in 6 centres, 3 points in 12 centres, 2 points in 19 centres and 1 point in 19 centres. The index decreased by 2 points in Tripura centre and 1 point each in Darjeeling, Sholapur and Puducherry centres, while in the remaining 8 centres the index remained stationary.

The maximum increase of 7 points each in Bhilwara, Vijaywada and Salem centres is mainly due to increase in the prices of Rice, Wheat, Groundnut Oil, Poultry (Chicken), Vegetable & Fruit items, Bidi, Cigarette, Dhoti (Cotton), Saree (Synthetic), Shirting Cloth (Synthetic), Trouser Cloth (Synthetic), Medicine (Allopathic), Toilet Soap, Tailoring Charges, etc. The increase of 6 points each in Belgaum, Ajmer, Ghaziabad and Mundakkayam centres is due to increase in the prices of Rice, Wheat, Jowar, Groundnut Oil, Milk (Buffalo), Vegetable & Fruit items, Tea (Readymade), Snack (Sweet), Snack (Saltish), Firewood, Saree (Synthetic), Toilet Soap, Tailoring Charges, etc. The decrease of 2 points in Tripura centre is due to decrease in the prices of Rice, Wheat Atta, Fish Fresh, Onion, Vegetable items, Sweater, etc.

The point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-IW(General) for the month of March, 2012 is 8.65% as compared to 7.57% in February, 2012. Inflation based on Food Index attained the level of 8.16% in March, 2012 as compared to 5.08% in February, 2012.

The CPI-IW for April, 2012 will be released on the last working day of the next month, i.e. 31st May, 2012.
